چکیده

In the next ten years the amounts of waste wood impregnated with Cu, Cr and As (CCA) is expected to increase dramatically world wide. CCA has been widely used for wood preservation since the early 1950s and because the fixation of CCA in the wood is good, the concentration of CCA is still high, when the wood is at the end of service. In some countries e.g. Denmark and Norway, the use of As for wood preservation has recently been forbidden and both in EU and USA restriction on the use of CCA has been given. However, there will still be a lot of older CCA impregnated wood in the waste in many years to come. Development of safe methods for handling of the CCA impregnated waste wood is necessary mainly due to the content of As. The present paper outlines some treatment methods for the waste wood and problems of handling impregnated waste wood as e.g. sorting impregnated wood from not-impregnated wood Combustion of CCA treated wood together with municipal solid waste is problematic. To avoid emission of As it is necessary to install special flue gas cleaning systems at the plants. Furthermore the result will be a very large amount of ash residues enriched with Cu, Cr and As compared to the ash composition of today. Thus it is beneficial or even necessary to sort the impregnated wood from other waste, which is already done in e.g. Denmark and Finland, and treat the impregnated wood separately. Thermal treatment of the wood in plants equipped with special flue gas purification systems is one treatment method and residues from such processes (combustion and pyrolysis) are characterized and extraction experiments are performed. Knowledge of the characteristics of such toxic residues is of crucial importance in order to ensure safe handling.

Characterization of Residues from Thermal Treatment of Cca Impregnated Wood. Chemical and Electrochemical Extraction

Thermal treatment of CCA impregnated waste wood is a way to utilize the energy resource of the wood and at the same time to reduce the volume of the waste. An issue of concern in relation to the thermal treatment is As emission to the air. Meanwhile there is still a matter to cope with when methods to avoid As emission are implemented; the residues with increased concentrations of Cu, Cr and As...

Suitability assessment for handling methods of municipal solid waste

Solid waste management is challenging in Phnom Penh city, Capital of Cambodia. The only one formal treatment taken is the final disposal of mixed waste into an open dumpsite. The current study analyses the physical and chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste disposed of in the dumpsite to assess their suitable handling methods. The current study found that the major compositions of wa...

Combustion of Corn Stover Bales in a Small 146-kW Boiler

Spring harvested corn stover was used for direct combustion in a 146 kW dual chamber boiler designed for wood logs. Stover had a very low moisture content (6.83 ± 0.17%), a gross calorific value (GCV) of 18.57 MJ/kg of dry matter (±0.32 MJ/kg DM) and an ash content of 5.88% (±1.15%). Small stover bales (8.83 ± 0.90 kg) were placed manually in the upper combustion chamber at a rate of 10.5 to 12...

Ash Transformation and Deposition Behavior during Co-firing Biomass Fuels with Sewage Sludge

In the present work, the ash transformation and deposition behavior during wheat straw and wood waste combustion were investigated by combustion experiments in an entrained flow reactor. The influence of sewage sludge addition on ash chemistry and deposition tendency was also studied. During combustion wheat straw, fine fly ash particles smaller than 2.5 μm are mainly formed due to vaporization...

Alkaline disinfection of urban wastewater and landfill leachate by wood fly ash.

Wood fly ash is an industrial by-product of the combustion of different wood materials and is mostly disposed of as waste on landfills. In our preliminary experiments, wood ash exhibited antibacterial activity against urban wastewater bacteria and we focused on wood fly ash as a potential substrate for wastewater disinfection. The addition of ash at a concentration of 10 g L⁻¹ (1%) caused an in...
